Gratitude Sunday * October 9, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– This 10-day house sitting retreat, and how I haven’t had to rush off to a job each morning…I’ve just gotten to enjoy where I am, and my cat, and my garden, and the sunshine in the yard. And oh how I have enjoyed it.

– Seeing F. again today after not seeing each other all week…so good to see him!! We both enjoyed our alone time; it’s so important to have a balance like that.

– Writing my gratitude list outside on the lawn chair one warm-for-October night this week, wrapped in a blanket, crickets all around, Big Dipper ahead of me, the garden next to me, the half-moon at my back, writing by nothing more than cloud light. I could’ve sat there forever…

– Hearing blue jays on cloudy, chilly days. To me, that is Autumn.

– Gorgeous weather for much of the week. There was a whole other level of appreciation there, since I know these warm days are numbered!

– Nourishing myself from my garden. In what’s probably an energy conservation measure, my body isn’t tolerating much food, and only very light foods are ‘allowed’…mostly vegetables & fruits, and a few other things. I feel like every bite really counts, and I’ve been feeling so good about the fuel I’m putting in…my own completely fresh, homegrown, organic vegetables. (Local, organic grapes & apples too, that I’ve harvested.) While it’s doing the very best that it can while it struggles with this as-yet-unidentified sickness, I know I’m giving it the very best that I can…and that feels really good.

– The wisdom of my body. It really knows. How it knows, and tells me, is an endlessly fascinating mystery!

– Pu-erh tea. My new favorite.

– My cat settling down on my face to go to sleep, trying to get as close as possible! She sometimes forgets that I need to breathe. 🙂

– Harvesting seeds around the garden; a quiet activity I really love.

– Lingering in bed for a long time yesterday, with rain falling, leaves beginning to change color outside the window, a cozy bed, and my cat sleeping next to me (see below…I love how she curls her back feet while she’s sleeping).

– Washing machines. I found myself being so thankful for this modern invention, because I had absolutely no energy for anything other than lying in a heap in the sun in the backyard. And yet my clothes were getting cleaned for me! Just like that. I was so grateful.

– A clothesline. I miss having one at our apartment. I love hanging things on the line, love the sight of them, love the smell of the clothes once they’re dry.

– Watching golden leaves flying off the trees against the sunny blue sky on a warm, windy day.

– Playing the piano here at my folks’ house. It always feels so good to play.

– Feeling happy and centered this week, with glimmers of hopefulness sprinkled in, even. What a nice feeling.

– The heating pad…and preheating the foot of the bed with it so that I have warm toes when I climb in!

– Homegrown heirloom tomatoes!

Black Russian, Mortgage Lifter (pink), Juane Flamme, and Green Zebra

Gratitude Sunday * October 2, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– The weather! This week we had incredible weather — sunny, settled, and in the 80s. I’ve savored it. And there’s more in the forecast!

– Blanket on the lawn, magazine, ice water, warm breezes, bright sun & dappled shade, blackbirds chattering, sleeves rolled up, sun-warmed body.

– Our crock-pot.

– A wonderful dream, where my soul sister Sonja (who’s been on the other side for 7 years now) came to hang out with me. I’ve been missing her a lot so this was really special. In the dream, we went swimming and she reminded me of our anniversary, which I had totally forgotten about! When she was living, we’d always celebrate our “friendship anniversary” sometime during the month of September, usually by taking ourselves to lunch at our favorite restaurant. We were coming up on our 16th anniversary when she died. For some reason, I guess I stopped remembering our anniversaries several years back, and would have forgotten this one too, had it not been for her reminder dream (on the last day of September!). In the dream, we calculated together that it would be 23 years this year, and we marveled at that!

– Having a 10-day retreat at my parents’ house while they’re away. Having the private outdoor space that is their backyard… having my garden right there to putter around in… hearing crickets — and nothing else — at night… being able to hang things on the clothesline… playing the piano in their living room… reading outside next to my garden with tea, with my feet on the cool grass, until it’s too dark to see… you can see why it’s a retreat!

– A canceled work-related meeting, meaning I could stay home and slack off a bit! Perfect since I felt especially crappy this week.

– Meeting my Hubby at the neighborhood farmer’s market today 🙂

– Staying out in my garden tonight until dark, pressing nasturtium leaves. What a quiet, centering activity that was.

– The smell of clothes that have dried on the line outside! And simply just hanging things out on the line. This is one of my favorite activities; today I hung out my pajamas, towel, and the down comforter just so they’d get ‘that smell’.

– Letting myself cry instead of holding it back. Sometimes you just need a bit of a cry. It feels cleansing.

And now here’s another little garden tour for you; it looks much like the one from last month, but it was such a beautiful evening that I couldn’t let it pass without showing you. 😉

Gratitude Sunday * September 25, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– Hot showers on cool mornings

– Bob Ross painting shows. Sometimes I turn one on to have in the background as I go about my day, just for the calming, soothing vibe they emit. When there’s turmoil in your life, turn on Bob Ross!

– Solar cooked quinoa, with nama shoyu raw soy sauce – yum

– Making more incredible grape jam & fruit leather. Recipes soon, I promise!

– Ear plugs

– Perfectly warmed air floating in through the windows. This is my favorite season!

– CT scan normal!!! I was so relieved. No clues yet, then, as to why I’m so sick, but I’m so glad they didn’t uncover anything scary. I feel like I take really good care of my body, and it’s gratifying to see concrete results of that.

– Eating things from my own garden. I love the energetics of that…how my food has been handled only by my own hands…not by anyone else’s, not picking up energies from anyone or anywhere else. So pure.

– Working from home. Being home during the day on weekdays — that is a lifelong dream come true!

– Preserving the bounty of kale by making delicious kale chips for enjoyment through the winter!

– 80+ degree weekend weather! And I’m gonna get out & enjoy it right now…

Gratitude Sunday * September 18, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– Hubby staying home from work on Monday of this week. It was so nice to have him home!

– Getting most of my fall garden seeds planted. YAY! I’m happy to have this finally done!

– The heating pad — sometimes it’s just the right thing isn’t it.

– September in Colorado. These are the best days of the entire year!

– Lying outside in the sun on the grass today! The weather was perfect. Sunny, clear, not a single cloud, and 74 degrees.

– Tea & a nice chat with my mom on a rainy, cloudy, fallish day, midweek.

– Night rain.

– Harvesting 9 more pounds of wild grapes to be made into fruit leather!

– Nurses. Have you ever noticed that, on the whole, they’re just some of the sweetest, nicest people ever?

– Having some very rare near-normal energy for part of the day yesterday, and taking full advantage of it by doing lots of errands with my hubby on our bikes, in absolutely gorgeous weather!

– Looking through some old photo albums at my parents’ house this week; I love doing this. It’s really grounding and I love the memories that are evoked. And the laughter!! The things we did, and the clothes we wore, always make me laugh. This, for instance. It’s me, in my nightgown, sawing at the kitchen table. Why?? That’s a very good question…

– That although we live in a 3rd floor attic apartment, I can still kinda be outside by sitting on the ledge of our screenless window with my feet on the roof slope. I call it my balcony. It’s not…at all…a balcony…but hey I’ll take it!

– Watching my lobelia seedlings flourish. The teeny tiny seeds arrived in one of those neato seed postcards…all the way from Alaska when my aunt visited there a couple months ago. I hope they do this well once I bring them inside for the winter!

– Feeling much more grounded & emotionally stable after an absolutely hellish first part of the week. Gah!!

– The smell of lavender essential oil and how it calms me down immediately when I take deep breaths of it straight from the bottle.

– All of you who read my blog, and leave me such sweet, supportive comments! Thank you.

Gratitude Sunday * September 11, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– All the love and support my family gives on a daily basis! Thank you. How did I ever, EVER get so lucky?

– The sweetest card, out of the blue but on a day I needed it most, from my wonderful Hubby…just to say “I Love You”.

– A great Labor Day lunch with my Hubby & parents at their house. The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, the company was wonderful, and we all sat out on the lawn next to the garden after lunch and just hung out & chatted.

– Walking barefoot.

– Smelling other peoples’ grills, reminding me there’s still some summer left!

– Cooler weather so that we can have our windows open all day now! I love this time of year. Thankful to be done with the intense heat of summer!

– Some incredible words coming to me through an email this week from a special friend.

– Chilly rainy night. Cozy. Quiet. Candles. Tea.

– That my wild grape fruit leather & jam turned out AWESOME! I’ll share the ‘recipes’ soon!

– Accomplishing lots of moneymaking work. That felt good.

– The smell of wet wood after a rain.

– Fresh lemon balm tea at 6:30am one cool, cloudy morningwhile sitting at the open window watching people on the street below begin their day.

– The sounds of autumn — rain on the roof, geese honking overhead, blue jays, slow crickets.

– And also, reminders of summer — warm afternoons, cicadas, the smell of a mowed lawn, BBQs.

– My MP3 player for the middle of the night when I’m awake and miserable in my body…the music distracts and comforts so nicely.

– Releasing some huge, deep emotion and feeling better afterward — like how you feel better after you throw up!

– Flower essences. I’m always amazed at how they work. And grateful to have the set of them (Australian Bush Flower Essences) so that I have them when I need them most!

– Learning how best to care for myself, and putting it into action when needed. One day this week it was needed, so I went to the zoo, bought a root beer float & a snack of carrots & celery sticks. I sat in my special spot, then visited my favorite animals (the birds). Later in the evening, I dimmed all the lights, lit candles (amazing how those two things alone can soften your mood), took a hot shower, washed my face, took some flower essences, and journaled.

– Buying & trying some Pu-erh tea, something new I’ve never had before. I like it!

– Preserving the bountiful harvest. I began feeling like a squirrel this week, getting everything ‘put up’ before frost. This week I made pickles, sauerkraut, whole wheat sourdough tortillas, zucchini cookies, kale chips, wild grape jam & fruit leather, and dried zucchini & sage & lavender. Those homey activities ground me and make me so happy!

– Running into my parents at the farmer’s market today! Heehee! After I got over being completely surprised and disoriented, it was really cool!!

– An afternoon visit today to our local botanic gardens; that felt so good.
