Our City Dawn Chorus

I love when I happen to wake up early enough to hear the early-morning birds, before the noise of the city starts up. Last Sunday morning I awoke and decided to record our dawn chorus because it’s so beautiful!

I really love birdsong. I come from a long line of bird watchers and nature lovers…my dad would take me on nature walks as a little kid, pointing out whose nest was whose (my favorite was the oriole’s sweat-sock nest!), and whose song we were hearing around us (my favorite was the red-winged blackbird). Hearing birdsong is one of my true, deep pleasures in life!

Here’s the sound of our city dawn chorus, with the hollow — almost haunting — song of robins.

Does it sound like yours? Is it different? Who sings at dawn in your neighborhood?

The Grass is Always Greener…

After a very dry winter, we’ve been getting some nice April showers that have been greening everything right up.

Nothing, however, is greener than this particular carpet of grass next door. This grass is totally incredible. It should be out winning awards. Maybe you can’t see its piercingly psychedelically impossibly green color so well from your monitor, but trust me, this is some kick-ass grass.

Making Time for the Outdoors, Every Day

Today was a lost day, as some just turn out to be! I did almost nothing! But each and every day, I make sure to get out for a walk. It’s a wonder what a brisk walk outdoors can do — feeling the chilly breeze across your face, squinting into the sun, and hearing robins singing in stereo from trees all around you…all while breathing deeply and moving your body.

Today was chilly and refreshing. I walked to a favorite destination, with a bag over my shoulder filled with hot tea in a thermos, mittens, and my camera…

Glorious Early Spring Flowers!

I had a wonderful St. Patty’s day dinner with my folks last night (corned beef, cabbage, potatoes, Irish soda bread, Irish beer, and a banana cake with chocolate-coffee frosting & green sprinkles!), and as I was riding my bike home in the peaceful night, it began snowing lightly. This morning at 7:00, the neighborhood looked like a wonderland! Here’s a picture, though it was much neater in person:

But spring is right around the corner, so after the snow melted I took a walk in the sunny afternoon to see all the blooming beauties…
