Anyone else out there a big fan of Northern Exposure?! 🙂 I think we’ve seen every episode at least once.
In one of the episodes, Marilyn Whirlwind tells a story that has stuck with me to this day. I wanted to share it with you…
“My uncle once told me about a warrior who had a fine stallion. Everybody said how lucky he was to have such a horse. “Maybe,” he said. One day the stallion ran off. The people said the warrior was unlucky. “Maybe,” he said. Next day, the stallion returned, leading a string of fine ponies. The people said it was very lucky. “Maybe,” the warrior said. Later, the warrior’s son was thrown from one of the ponies and broke his leg. The people said it was unlucky. “Maybe,” the warrior said. The next week, the chief led a war party against another tribe. Many young men were killed. But, because of his broken leg, the warrior’s son was left behind, and so was spared.”

Oh yes, Northern Exposure. It felt like home (or my world) when I used to watch that program. I absolutely loved it.
I loved Marilyn Whirwind, what a great character. I like the story you have shared here. Food for thought.
Much love.
Hi Trish,
We loved Marilyn too! And I know what you mean about that program feeling like home. It was such a sweet show.
CitySucker,
Yeah it is a great tale. A favorite of mine 🙂
I like old family TV series, with Little House on the Prairie and The Waltons being my favorites, but I watched them so many times that I know all the lines by heart 🙂
So I’ll look out for Northern Exposure, it sounds like a great series, I hope I’d find a link somewhere to download the entire series!
My husband and I also remember this story and have integrated its message into our lives–we always know things may not be as they seem at first. We’ve come to expect a little bit of bad in the good and a little bit of good in the bad. That’s a great post–thanks for bringing that story up again. 🙂
Evi,
I bet you’d love Northern Exposure. It’s a really sweet series; they don’t make ’em like that anymore! Good luck downloading it — I have no idea where to look for that!
My hubby has already found the entire series ready to download for free!
I could email you the links if you’re interested.
And I have already watched the very first episode today and loved it! 🙂
Seriously, he found the whole series for free download?!? Wow! I’d love the link, YEAH! 🙂
Finally found this folk tale again after many years. Thanks very much. I can’t remember what circumstances made Marilyn recite it in the show but I recall it being the key that fit the door of a wonderful episode of N.Exp..
