Gratitude Sunday * September 4, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– A break in the heat finally!!

– Coming into my favorite season of all, Autumn.

– Backing up photos and finally deleting my camera cards — there were photos on there from last November! It feels great to have gotten that project accomplished.

– The abundance of fruits & vegetables at this time of year. It’s all I’ve been craving & eating.

– The impossibly delicious Colorado peaches I’ve been getting from the farmer’s market.

– Being at my garden during an incredible rainstorm.

– Being at my garden, period. I was needing a major change of venue this week, and it felt great to go hang out there a couple times, knowing beforehand that I was going to refrain from doing any work in it.

– Genuine, hysterical laughter!

– Save for a morning meeting, not having to be anywhere other than home this week, and having the time to rest my poor body. I’m just so sick…and have been getting sicker…but they’re not sure what it is yet.

– Feeling more emotionally whole this weekend, after a week of feeling profoundly broken, empty, desolate, drained, and hopeless — both in a physical and emotional sense.

– My Hubby and my family and my cat, for keeping me upright with their support and love and laughs!

– The color of the sky, right this minute as I write this…

– Harvesting 12 lbs of gorgeous wild grapes this week!! And starting on the process of making them into grape freezer jam & maybe even fruit leather.

– The most incredible wild grape smell filling our whole house, from the two bubbling pots on the stove right now!

– Working on a mandala, which I haven’t done for a while. I’m not that artistically inclined in the way of drawing or painting, but mandalas…I just love creating those.

– A cup of fresh mint tea, savored in my garden.

– Eating Gazpacho made from garden stuff!!

– A cleansing rainstorm.

– Writing my gratitudes each day in my journal, and each Sunday here… and reading other peoples’ gratitudes too.

Gratitude Sunday * August 28, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– That we’re not in the path of a hurricane. I feel like I’m going through an “inner” hurricane but, oh, I think going through an actual physical one would just completely put me over the edge. My heart goes out to all of you having to deal with that real, live, looming hurricane.

– Limping my way through the latter part of this week, and hopefully onto a better week ahead. I must’ve jinxed it when I said I was feeling so much lighter last week!

– Remembering, as I write this, to choose love over fear — and then immediately feeling lighter. Why is it so hard to remember this when we’re in crisis??

– Also remembering to not resist what is. When we resist, we suffer. After I’ve exhausted myself going round and round in my head, it’s a relief to finally give up and accept.

– Eating a bell pepper straight off the stalk. And then a tomato with basil. And then celery… and pretty soon I’ve had lunch in my garden!

– A flower in the bathroom.

– Going into the beautiful, tempting Whole Foods store and leaving without buying one single thing. Self restraint can feel so satisfying.

– Going swimming on Thursday morning with my mom at our friend’s apartment building’s warm indoor pool. That was so fun!

– Watching Annie Hall (1977) on Friday night after both Hubby and I each had a horror of a day. It felt so great to laugh!

– My garden cucumbers. And how they’re flooding in right now when I need them most; when my tummy is delicate and finicky, often the only thing I want to eat is cucumbers with vinegar, salt, and pepper. It feels so good to nourish my body with my own stuff.

– Organic raspberries on sale at the store.

– Magazines. Sometimes there’s nothing like a magazine. Few words, lots of pretty pictures, and inspiration. I turned some frequent flier miles into subscriptions to Sunset and Coastal Living last year, and have been enjoying those so much more than I thought! I find myself grabbing for them more often than my (beloved) Mother Earth News, cause sometimes I just don’t feel like turning on my brain and learning something, and instead want to feast my eyes and imagination. I love sitting outside in my stair garden in the evening, with tea and one of those magazines.

– Music on my MP3 player and how it can calm me down and bring me back to Earth at 2:30 in the morning after a terrible dream.

– Returning completed library books. There’s something really satisfying about that!

– Enjoying the last of summer, but also welcoming the subtle hints of fall.

Gratitude Sunday * August 21, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– A new, lighter feeling these past couple weeks. Feeling really excited to wake up each morning because of all the things I want to get started on! Can I just tell you how good this feels?! Have you been feeling a little lighter too?

– Eating so well out of my garden. My garden food makes me so happy.

– The luxury of being able to have a quiet week with no obligations, no have-tos. Actually as I write this, I realize it’s no accident. A luxury, oh my yes, but very much engineered. In order to get to this space I’m in now, there was lots of hard work & hard thinking, shuffling and hemming and hawing and vacillating, saving money, and then finally mustering my courage to take action around my job dissatisfaction. And I’m so grateful to be reaping the rewards of all that now.

– Watching a dragonfly hunting bugs in the evening light; turns out they are agile, lightning-quick bug-snarfing machines!!

– Doing my mending while finally watching my “Creating Your Space of Love” DVD that I bought at an excellent Anastasia workshop a couple years ago. Have you heard of the Anastasia series (by Vladimir Megré)? It’s quite something. Far out, and I love it. The workshop was incredible, too. I took lots of notes, and maybe someday I’ll post them to this blog.

– Ripping through lots of library books! It’s been a hang-low, not-feeling-well week…and I’ve been outside reading a lot in the beautiful summer breezes.

– Clean(er) house!

– Mending favorite things rather than buying new ones…and looking around to see what I can use to make a new laundry bag instead of buying a new one.

– Feeling as though I’ve gotten a really important bit of divine assistance this week. All I can think is “thank you thank you thank you.”

– Forgotten, long-buried creative impulses beginning to bubble to the surface again!

– Having my Hubby to go through life with. And how much he makes me laugh!!! (I think I said this last week. Ah well it bears repeating.)

– Having a nice break from the computer, and then coming back again to post this Gratitude Sunday list.

– Having a wonderful evening visit with my folks last night, sitting out in the perfect air, chatting until past 10pm with crickets and cicadas all around.

– Washing the scum off our shower curtain; heehee, it’s the little things… (at least the scum was a pretty pink though).

– Alone time. We all need alone time…

– That my body, in its wisdom, tells me what would be good to eat. I love how I don’t have to wonder…how it just lets me know. It’s very certain!

– A long nap on a blanket in the grass today.

Gratitude Sunday * August 14, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– A Monday morning bath… oh heaven, heaven.

– Laughter and how it’s like an instant happy pill.

– How much my Hubby makes me laugh — and just melts my heart in general — on a daily basis!!

– Reading a funny book. The books I love to read are all nonfiction that I can learn something from, and I recently borrowed a library book called The Wild Life: A Year of Living on Wild Food by John Lewis-Stempel. It was nonfiction and very interesting, and also happened to be really funny. I’d forgotten what a treat it is to read a funny book — I think the last one was back in 2004 when I read Round Ireland With a Fridge by Tony Hawks during lunches in the dining hall of my dorm — it was hilarious, and almost the only enjoyable part of that one-semester University experience!

– Interlibrary loan!

– Finding a local source for pastured chicken (for Colorado folks, it’s Cottonwood Creek Farms).

– Going to the farmer’s market again and getting 6 fragrant & delicious organic French melons and two 5-lb pastured chickens for $15 apiece. $3/lb is incredible for local pastured chicken, compared to Whole Foods who robs you at the rate of $6.99/lb for non-organic, non-free-range, non-local, non-pastured chicken parts! I’m so glad we’ve found the Cottonwood Creek folks!

Hubby's lunch today -- organic French melon filled with grassfed cottage cheese!

– Garden work done, errands done, getting lots of loose ends taken care of around the house.

– Eating our garden produce! Especially those cucumbers…

– Raspberries. I could live on raspberries alone.

– The evening sun streaming into our apartment through the west windows. It’s my favorite time of day in this place…so warm and inviting.

– Having so much less stress in my life! Priceless.

– Not having the energy for cooking to be my creative outlet yesterday, so instead, making this:

– Getting a dreaded doctor appointment over with. My primary doctor referred me to a neurologist, so I went there on Thursday. I hate doctor appointments, especially with someone new I’ve never met because I don’t know what to expect. I don’t particularly enjoy discussing the details of my health with a total stranger — who may or may not even be listening — and feeling like I’m on stage, trying to say my lines as fast as I can before the light goes red. And I usually walk out only to realize I’ve forgotten to tell them something important! And because of a previous awful experience with a doctor who treated me incredibly badly, this appointment had really been hanging over me. I took lots of flower remedies, grounded myself, asked for ‘help’ in getting through it, wrote my symptoms on a 3×5 card so I wouldn’t forget anything, and made sure to put my energy very much on guard just in case. And as it turned out, I didn’t even need to do all of that — the nurses couldn’t have been any nicer, and the doctor was very good and listened with his full attention to what I was saying, and asked if he could keep the 3×5 card. I was so relieved when I left, that I’d been heard and respected, and very glad to have gotten that dang appointment over with. The doctor ordered MRI scans of my brain and spinal cord, and I’ll get those Thursday. I hope I get to peek at them; to think…what magic we have now, to be able to see the innards of your own brain on a computer screen!

Gratitude Sunday * August 7, 2011

Sunday’s a good day to remember what we’ve been grateful for over the past week, don’t you think? I’m joining Taryn over at Wooly Moss Roots in her Gratitude Sunday tradition, and here’s my list:

– Having such a wonderful, carefree vacation day swimming at a lake.

– Watching a rainstorm with tea on my parents’ porch.

– Lying against my Hubby while writing in my journal, and feeling so content.

– Getting lots done this week. Lots of stuff crossed off the ol’ to-do list.

– Really sweet emails from blog readers! Thanks you guys!!!

– Moments of synchronicity. They’re always an assuring sign to me.

– Incredible hibiscus blossom in my Stair Garden this week.

– Having all the windows open in the evening and hearing the crickets in stereo.

– Getting some cleaning done. I enjoy a clean house so much, too bad it’s so hard to keep it up.

– Thinking about the hard questions…where I want to go with my life, what I want to do long-term, and what I want to change in myself right now.

– Cool nights where I sleep so much better.

– Hot days that remind me what season it is!

– Sitting by the window at twilight.

– Plowing through books I’ve been wanting to read for so long.

– Sleep — the master Reset Button.
